Sam Betten – Me and My Bike

Long-course specialist Sam Betten on his distinctive Specialized S-Works Shiv and how he’s graduated from bling to Batmobile over the years

My bike is… a Specialized S-Works Shiv (many people say it is the bike Batman would ride, you know)

I am lucky enough to have ridden for… Specialized Australia for over four years.

I love my bike because… it is super stealthy and very aero. I love how everything matches perfectly with the matt black, glass black and red highlights – including my awesome custom SCODY A.I.R Tri Suit. This is my dream setup and to me it doesn’t get any better.

My first ever bike was… a chrome Mongoose BMX. Very bling when I was 12 years old!

My other bikes are… an S-Works Venge fitted with Shimano Di2 and Roval CLX 60 wheels, as well as a Specialized Stumpjumper mountain bike for some off-road fun.

The best ride I ever had was… a few months ago on my favorite long ride from Brisbane to Mooloolaba and back. It was the first ride after having a Body Geometry Bike Fit at my local bike shop. Ride stats were 242km in 7hrs (34.5km/h average speed).

The worst ride I ever had was… in Japan while racing an ITU Asia Cup event. I crashed while going 45km/h then got up and crashed five minutes later and broke my collarbone. Not a fun day on the bike.

I look after my bike by… washing and cleaning it weekly. I always say that ‘a clean bike is a fast bike’. Any major work I entrust to the expert mechanics at Planet Cycles. They are as OCD as I am with bikes, which is great.
