Port Macquarie set the scene for plenty of thrills and spills over the weekend
With over 700 athletes tearing down the pavement, 2000 volunteers getting involved and countless spectators cheering on, Port Macquarie was the triathlon to be at over the weekend.
With the surprise win from Canadian Elliot Holtham and the the stellar performance from 2x 70.3 Ironman World Champion Melissa Hauschildt, no one could guess the outcome of the day.
After the bike leg, Luke Bell was dominating the course with an 11 minute lead on Paul Ambrose and Matty White but after only 15km into the run Bell’s hammy gave out forcing him to walk. This opened up the race to Elliot Holtham who blazed ahead of the also struggling Ambrose to take the win with a time of 8:35:18. While Nick Baldwin delivered a career best performance taking out the third.
However the real standout performance of the day came from Mel Hauschildt who was racing her first ever Ironman. Lisa Marangon was dominating the entire course after an impressive swim and bike but it was Hauschildt’s trademark run that gave her the edge at the 24km mark of the run and giving her the win (9:28:43) with Marangon close behind.
