Your weekly review in what’s happening in the world of tri

This weekend opened with one of Australia’s best loved and arguably most relaxed races in the country. Wrapping itself around the sunny north Queensland resort of The Mecure Capricorn, Ironman 70.3 Yeppoon kicked off the Aussie triathlon season. This year Tim Reed and Gina Crawford took home the top spot. Tim Reed once again blowing the competition out of the water with a time of 3:55:26 and Gina Crawford also leaving her competitors in the dust with a time of 4:23:05.

Overseas in Mont Tremblant, Canada, the Aussies took the spotlight with Luke Bell finishing first in the Ironman North-American Championship. Welcomed by sunny skies and only a small whip of wind, the stage was set for Bell’s impressive race easily pushing him to the front off the pack early on. Finishing almost 5 minutes ahead of second place, Bell finished with a time of 8:26:26. In the women’s, American and ITU superstar Haley Churra took the win after building an early lead from the start, with Aussie Rebekah Keat finishing in an impressive second place with a time of 09:16:55.

We also had plenty of success overnight at Ironman 70.3 Timberman, New Hampshire, USA with our very own 220 columnist Mel Hauschildt smoking the competition, winning by nearly 10 minutes. All-American swimmer Andy Potts took first place in the mens with Aussie Leon Griffin close on his heels the entire race coming in at a respectable second place.
