Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial 2014
Athletes flocked down to southport to tick this Aussie fav off their tri bucket list
This year the born and bred Queensland duo, Josh Amberger and Ashleigh Gentle claimed the title in their open races.
Both Amberger and Gentle, smashed their sprint distance races right from the get go which featured a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.
The 2014 Gold Coast Tri was the twelfth anniversary of the Luke Harrop Memorial race, an event that pays tribute to Luke Harrop, a respected Australian triathlete who was tragically killed in 2002.
“This race means so much and it’s really important to keep this event going and get the local talent coming through.” said Amberger.
In a fitting tribute, Luke’s best mates crossed the finish line together, in the Mate’s Wave of the event, to pay their respect to their dear friend.
Nearly 2000 triathletes turned out to take part in the race, a clear affirmation from competitors that the Gold Coast Tri – Luke Harrop Memorial is one to mark on the race calendar.
Athletes swam, cycled and ran across three different distances, including the Gold Coast Superkidz, Gold Coast Enticer and Gold Coast Triathlon, making the Gold Coast Tri a perfect event for everyone to get involved.
